WAUZHUSHK ONIGUM NATION – A Kenora-area First Nation is entering a two-week lockdown, after a member of a nearby community tested positive for COVID-19.

The Wauzhushk Onigum Nation has so far had no COVID-19 cases of its own. Waylon Scott, chief of nearby Wabaseemoong Independent Nations, confirmed a member of his community had tested positive in a Facebook post Saturday.

Later the same day, the Northwestern Health Unit confirmed three new COVID-19 cases in the Kenora area.

Wauzhushk Onigum’s lockdown is set to begin at 12 p.m. Monday and will remain in place until June 22. Chief Chris Skead announced the move on Facebook Saturday, beginning with well wishes for Wabaseemoong.

“At this time I want to say our prayers on behalf of Wauzhushk Onigum to our brothers and sisters to the north of us,” he said. “I hope and wish that your community stays safe and healthy in these times.”

Skead said the delayed implementation of the lockdown was intended to allow community members to stock up on essential supplies like food and medication.

Nobody will be permitted to enter or leave the community during the lockdown, with the exception of emergency services and travel for essential medical purposes. Nurses and doctors will continue to visit the community.

Essential workers employed outside of the community “will need to make arrangements with employers,” Skead said.

Skead said COVID-19 testing in the community would continue to be available, and further encouraged members to practice social distancing and wear masks when in public.

“I know it’s not easy,” he told members in the video. “There’s a lot of anxiety. Especially as Anishinaabe people, we’re very social.”
