UPDATED: Fire destroys a home in Conmee Township (2 Photos)

Firefighters arrived to find the house engulfed in flames.

TOWNSHIP OF CONMEE, Ont. — The lone male occupant escaped injury but an overnight fire destroyed a home in Conmee Township, west of Thunder Bay.

The single-family wood construction house was located on Highway 11/17 at Lundstrom Road.

Fire Chief Jason Fleck told TBNewswatch firefighters arrived about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday to find the residence already engulfed in flames.

"We did a defensive attack to protect exposures, and called in mutual aid from Oliver Paipoonge to help us with a water tanker shuttle to supply adequate water," Fleck said.

Crews spent most of the night at the scene.

Ontario Provincial Police stopped traffic on the highway for about an hour.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined.

In an interview Wednesday morning, Fleck said "There's some smouldering and hotspots...It's going to be a few days before we can get to the centre and the collapse of the building."
