FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION – Fort William First Nation has reported a new case of COVID-19 for the first time since November.

CEO Michael Pelletier broke the news via Facebook Friday evening with a live video update, urging members to follow provincial lockdown guidelines.

“The situation at hand is very serious,” he warned. “The stay-at-home orders are… vital for the safety of our community, and will help contain the spread if everyone is following them.”

The band offered few details on the case, saying only leadership had been informed of a case in the community on Friday.

“At this time, no further information regarding the positive case will be disclosed in order to protect their right to privacy,” it stated in a written notice to the community.

The individual was self-isolating and receiving support, Pelletier said, while FWFN’s surveillance team was working to trace contacts.

The First Nation bordering Thunder Bay experienced two previous cases in November, both of which have since been resolved.

Members can find updates and more information at the FWFN website.
