An iconic smoke stack on the city's south side is likely to come down after it was struck by lightning over the weekend.

The stack at the Western Grain elevator was hit in the early morning hours on Sunday. It hasn't been in use for more than 60 years, but the lightning strike did knock out power to the entire terminal.

Owner Maurice Mailhot says crews from Thunder Bay Hydro and Gridlink came out on Father's Day to get portions of the operation back up and running.

Half of the power system is still out of service and the railway tracks are also currently out of use.

Damage is still being assessed.  Mailhot is concerned the costs could meet or exceed the insurance on the terminal.
