Health unit reports 18 new cases

Active cases rise to 33 as Thunder Bay District Health Unit reports highest daily case count in nearly two months.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported 18 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday.

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported 18 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, the highest single-day total since April 4.

District First Nations accounted for 14 of those cases, while three were in other district communities and just one was in the Thunder Bay area.

Of Friday’s cases, 17 were attributed to close contact with a previously identified case, while an exposure category for one other case was still pending.

The number of active cases in the health unit rose from 19 to 33, with four previous cases declared resolved.

Another previous case screened positive for a COVID-19 variant of concern, bringing the total number of VOC cases detected in the TBDHU to 95.

The health unit has reported a total of 3,208 cases since the pandemic began, with 33 active, 3,112 considered resolved, and 63 deaths in which the virus was a contributing or underlying cause.
