THUNDER BAY – Case counts remained near their lowest levels in months Saturday, as the Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported four new cases of COVID-19.
With seven previous cases declared resolved, the number of active cases in the TBDHU fell slightly to 25. The active count has only dipped lower than that once since Nov. 11, when it hit 24 on Wednesday.
Saturday marked the 23rd straight day the TBDHU reported case counts in the single digits.
Of the four new cases, two were a result of travel outside of Northwestern Ontario, and two a result of close contact with a previously identified case.
The cases involved two Thunder Bay-area residents, and two residents of district First Nations.
Five previously-reported cases screened positive for COVID-19 variants of concern (VOCs), the health unit reported Saturday, bringing the total number of VOC cases reported to 85.
There were five district residents in hospital with the virus Saturday, with none of those in the Intensive Care Unit.
The health unit had an incidence rate of approximately 10 cases per 100,000 residents over the past week. That compares to a provincial incidence rate of 99.7 in the most recent Public Health Ontario data, for the week of May 12 to 18.
The health unit has reported a total of 3,180 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began. Of those, 3,092 are considered resolved and 25 active, with 63 deaths in which the virus was an underlying or contributing factor.
The health unit will not provide a daily report on Sunday or Monday, due to the long weekend.
