THUNDER BAY -- A female driver has been charged with a Highway Traffic Act offence after a collision between her SUV and a tanker truck resulted in both vehicles ending up in the ditch.

The crash happened just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday on Highway 11/17 near Wing Road west of Thunder Bay.

Provincial police said the westbound SUV had earlier side swiped an eastbound school bus on the highway near Fraser Road. There were no students on the bus at the time of the incident, police added.

The SUV continued west and collided with the eastbound tanker, which police said was empty.

The driver of the SUV, who was taken to hospital by ambulance for injuries that are not life threatening, has been charged with making an unsafe move to a lane or shoulder.
