Hospital's COVID-19 assessment centre opens

THUNDER BAY - The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is opening a COVID-19 assessment centre Tuesday.

THUNDER BAY - The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is opening a COVID-19 assessment centre Tuesday. The centre is located in a series of trailers just outside the Emergency Department entrance, in a bid to limit any risk of spreading infection.

"Entrance to [the centre] will be extremely limited," the hospital said in a release and it is meant to serve only those directed for screening by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit or Telehealth Ontario. It is not a walk-in or drop-in centre for people who feel they may have symptoms. Patients must be referred.

The assessment centre will be staffed by nurses, who will conduct assessment for symptoms of the virus. The hospital said last week it had access to around 900 COVID-19 test kits. It said Tuesday the use of those tests "will be determined by strict medical directives."

Anyone concerned they may be experiencing symptoms of the virus is directed to call the health unit at (807) 625-5900 or Telehealth at 1-866-797-0000.
