THUNDER BAY — Environment Canada says this has been the coldest January in Thunder Bay in almost two decades.

Data released Monday shows the mean temperature at Thunder Bay Airport this month was minus 18.5 Celsius, nearly four degrees lower than the long-term average.

It hasn't been this cold since 1994, when the January mean was minus 21.4.

Meteorologist Peter Kimbell says the city will experience only a brief reprieve through Tuesday, when the temperature will climb to zero.

But the deep freeze returns for the next four nights, with overnight lows ranging between minus 21 and minus 28.

Daytime highs from Wednesday through Friday will be well below normal.
