To the editor:
It sickened me to read your article "Only 'select pieces' of historic James Whalen tug may be preserved," on Sept 4.
If the city's pride prevents it from giving to the museum and must be scrapped, why save some the bones. Why bother?
Be bold. You need to scrap it all.
Like when the Le Sault de Ste. Marie Historical Sites, Inc. of the American Soo, had Lake Superior's other great salvage tug the Great Lakes Towing Company's Favorite.
It sprung leaks and the owner didn't have the resources or will to save it.
It was scrapped in DeTour, Mich, away from Sault Ste. Marie.
It was broken up in its entirety. Leaving pieces like proposed here only embitters people.
Scrap it all. Be bold.
If you are going to bury the memory of prior generations who worked so hard to bring the James Whalen home, do so completely. Show no restraint. They deserve better than lily-livered half measures like these.
