LETTER: What actions are being taken to make our highways safe?

Highway safety should be "everyone's concern."
letter-to-the-editor

To the editor,

Here we go again or still -- two more transport incidents, not a whole month goes by without one occurring!

I am baffled by why these incidents are still happening. What actions are being administered for a probable remedy?

Is it lack of experience by the operator or simply not concentrating on what they are operating?

One incident took place when a transport was speeding over the designated speed limit, no governor for speed control, driving more than the allowable hours in a day and at the same time, watching a movie - dah!

Another incident occurred when a transport crossed the oncoming lane, went into a ditch and ended up on a major railway line when the roadway was clear and dry.

These incidents were all posted by the media as per the reports from the O.P.P. and yet there was no mention of any MTO personnel being part of the investigating team.

I anticipate people do understand that these two incidents could have been much worse, resulting in road closures, deaths and least mentioned - railway closures.

What are local community members, MPPs and the Trucker's Association doing to prevent such incidents from occurring?

The OPP is doing the best they can with the resources they have, but they should not be the ones solely responsible for correcting this ongoing chain of events occurring on our major highways.

I am getting the impression that thoughts addressed to the issues are like a small ripple in a large lake - no notice of a disturbance.

On a political standpoint, we must not wait for the next government elected to be the "healer" of a pandemic when this issue involving those in the past showed poor results or actions without signs of improvement. This needs to be taken as everyone's concern!

Obviously, funding and resources are a major concern, but there must be some order of progress addressed to Ontarians showing a percentage drop in transport incidents -- thus making those who travel these roadways comfortable when doing so.

The more I hear of incidents on these roadways which I travel frequently, makes me not want to travel these roadways. Why?

Because my chances of staying safe in my domain are far more assuring than playing Russian roulette on a deadly highway.

Thank you.
