Lakehead University has launched the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining and Exploration.
The school hopes to play a lead role in economic development by bringing together Northern communities and the mining industry. The Centre of Excellence will encourage and support research, education and outreach activities regarding the nature and impacts of mining, particularly in Northwestern Ontario.
Lakehead University Provost Rod Hanley said there are great opportunities emerging in mining and the new centre will help address some of the risks associated.
The centre will focus on mineral deposit research, create new mining technology and develop solutions for environmental impacts of mineral exploration and infrastructure development.
Hanley said the centre will begin consulting with mining companies and communities immediately.
