Man barricaded in apartment taken into custody

A 40-year-old man was taken into custody late Thursday night following an incident in a south side apartment.

THUNDER BAY -- A man who barricaded himself in a south side apartment was taken into custody late Thursday night.

Thunder Bay Police were called to the 200 block of Rowand Street around 9:30 p.m. with regards to a resident who had allegedly committed an assault and discharged a fire extinguisher in a common area hallway.

When officers arrived, the accused would not come out of his apartment for police.

He was believed to be at risk to himself and others.

In the interest of public safety, residents of the building were evacuated.

Members of the emergency task unit gained entry to the apartment and the man was taken into custody at around 10:50 p.m.
The 40-year-old accused was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.

He will also be facing charges of assault and mischief under $5,000.
