THUNDER BAY - A man recently charged in connection with the 2017 death of a B.C. teen girl is currently in custody in Thunder Bay on unrelated charges, according to a B.C. police spokesperson.
Nanaimo RCMP announced on Wednesday Steven Bacon has been formally charged with the first-degree murder of 16-year-old Makayla Chang. B.C. RCMP said the murder charge against Bacon was laid after more than a three-year investigation.
Chang was last seen in March 2017 and her body was recovered in May 2017.
Bacon is currently in custody in the city facing unrelated charges, according to Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson Cst. Gary O'Brien. A Thunder Bay Police Service spokesperson confirmed Bacon is facing charges relating to sexual assault.
At this time there are no official plans to transport Bacon to B.C. to face the murder charge, B.C. RCMP said.
"There is a lot of talks right now but nothing has been finalized, we are looking at video-conferencing, there is COVID concerns, so there are a number of issues," O'Brien said. "The key was to get the charge laid and then we can worry about where he is going to testify if pleads guilty or not guilty, where it is going to happen and how we are going to make that happen."
A court date has not been set yet for Bacon’s first appearance on the murder charge, according to police.
