THUNDER BAY - A Thunder Bay man facing more than 40 charges related to voyeurism, making and possession of child pornography has been released from custody following a bail hearing earlier this week.
Thunder Bay police identified Brent Mehagan, 42, of Thunder Bay in connection with an investigation involving more than 300 victims, according to a previous media release.
Police arrested Mehagan on Dec. 3 and charged him with 43 charges related to voyeurism, making child pornography and possession of child pornography.
The accused appeared in court on Monday, Dec. 7 where he was granted bail to a surety and after pledging $5,000 for his release, according to court documents.
A court-ordered publication ban prevents the publication of evidence and information presented at Mehagan’s bail hearing. A separate publication ban is in effect which protects the identities of complainants and witnesses involved in the case.
Upon release, he must follow several conditions including remaining in his residence at all times, not to attend any of the following places: public parks, public swimming area where persons under the age of 16 are present, daycare centres, school grounds, playgrounds or community centres.
He is also not to seek or obtain any paid or unpaid activities that involve him being in a position of trust or authority toward people under the age of 16. Mehagan is also not to possess any cellphone, pager or personal digital assistant nor can he possess any computers or any other device that has access to the Internet or other digital networks.
In a news release issued by police on Dec. 4, Thunder Bay police said the related charges involved hundreds of victims and occurred at various public locations across the city. Investigators continue to work to identify and notify victims. The charges are not related to incidents involving physical touching, police said.
Police are also not identifying specific incident locations at this time.
Mehagan is scheduled to return to court in January.
