THUNDER BAY -  A Thunder Bay man is facing several charges after he was arrested by Thunder Bay police for allegedly carrying various weapons, cash and drugs on Monday night.

Jason Anthony Sample, 37, has been charged with unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, failing to comply with a judicial release order, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of a knife for a dangerous purpose and one count of resisting a police officer.

Sample appeared in bail court on Tuesday, Oct. 6, and was formally read his charges.

According to police, officers were dispatched to a residential address in the 200 block of Amelia Street West just after 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5 after receiving reports of a weapon. While police were on their way, they learned a man had pointed a handgun at another man during an altercation.

Officers arrived at an apartment where the incident was alleged to have occurred and noticed a closet being purposely held closed from the inside. Police told the individual their purpose for being in the apartment but the person refused to respond or exit, police say.

When officers opened the closet, a man lunged at them. During the man's arrest, he attempted to flee the apartment after a brief struggle with officers.

Police located approximately $1,600 in cash, suspected cocaine and drug trafficking paraphernalia.

In May, Sample was arrested by police on impaired and drug-related charges after officers went to check on the welfare of a man asleep behind the wheel of a running vehicle on Arthur Street. Police said when they spoke to the individual in the vehicle, he showed multiple signs of impairment and also located illicit pills, drug trafficking paraphernalia, knives and a replica firearm.

Sample was charged with various drug trafficking offences, operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs, possession of a prohibited weapon and failing to comply with a judicial release.

He was remanded into custody and will return to court on Oct. 13.
