A group of Matawa chiefs are calling for an appeal in the recent court case involving a Geraldton OPP officer.

Const. Brian Bellefeuille faced charges of assault causing bodily harm for an incident involving a man from Aroland First Nation.

Gary Megan suffered injuries allegedly caused in a jail-cell in February 2012.

Bellefeuille was found not guilty on May 3.

The Matawa Chiefs Council have sent a letter to the Ministry of the Attorney General, encouraging the Crown to file an appeal.

The Chiefs believe the incident and verdict has damaged the relationship between the OPP and First Nation people in the region.
