Military aircraft touches down in Thunder Bay (9 photos)

The showcase of the aircraft is part of an airplane rally hosted by the Canadian 99s

THUNDER BAY - A Canadian military aircraft touched down in Thunder Bay on Friday as part of the Gold Cup Air Rally.

The CP-140 Aurora aircraft and a military crew was flown in to the Thunder Bay International Airport despite foggy conditions.

A dozen other smaller aircraft are expected to arrive this weekend to take part in the Gold Cup Air Rally - a cross-Canada tour completed by women pilots.

The event is hosted by the Canadian 99s, an organization for female pilots created by Amelia Earheart in the 1930s.

“It’s pretty exciting. We got to see inside this massive airplane, and it was really interesting,” said Elizabeth Robinson, president of the 99s Sleeping Giant Chapter.

The aircraft and its crew were led by Capt. Mary Cameron-Kelly, an Aurora pilot who flew into Thunder Bay in conjunction with the 99s.

“Its main job is submarine hunting. We also do fishing patrols, search and rescue, and surveillance depending on what’s called upon, and we do a lot of training for young pilots,” she said.

“When they talked about coming up for the rally, it was surprising but I’m glad they’re doing it,” Robinson said.

Participants in the Gold Cup Rally will be in Thunder Bay until Monday.
