Lakehead University student Daphne Haggarty says she never expected someone to be so generous as to donate money for her education.
Haggarty joined other university students at the Success Through Giving luncheon Tuesday. Each student was brought together with their public donor. The total amount donated for student advancement was more than $400,000 this year.
Haggarty, third-year psychology student, received a portion of that money for her education. She said it was an honor to receive the award.
“When I first heard I was awarded I thought ‘wow that’s so generous that someone just reaches into their wallets and gives $100 to someone they don’t even know,’” Haggarty said.
“The donors do that year upon year. It’s just super generous. It’s such a privilege to attend such a university and developing personally because of it.
“To have this kind of support from donors shows they really value education and shows LU’s support for their students.”
While some people say she’s following in her father’s footsteps, Haggarty said that’s not the case. While going to work with her father was boring, she said she’s fascinated with how the brain works and wants to continue learning about it.
“I enjoy understanding why people act the way they do,” she said.
“What drives people, what motivates people and how the brain works. Those questions really fascinate me.”
