The local Multiple Sclerosis Society chapter is hoping to walk away from a crisis.
Last year, the society helped 85 people who suffer from MS with equipment to help them with mobility issues. Everything, from scooters to lifts, is given to those who otherwise couldn’t afford it in an effort to help them in their daily lives.
But this year, the society already helped 86 people with more than half a year to go.
“The demand is becoming greater and greater,” honourary Thunder Bay chapter chair Pat Lang said. “The demand is outpacing the rate at which we can raise funds.”
It’s critical the society hits its $25,000 fundraising goal at this year’s walk, which takes place May 27.
“(Otherwise) we won’t be able to support people who need the equipment,” Lang said.
The economy hasn’t helped the society reach its goals. Board member Wendy Morgan said people giving less, coupled with an increase in demand for research dollars, has also hurt the ability to get people the equipment they need. Morgan figures her equipment has cost more than $100,000 over the year.
“The need is so high for equipment and the cost of everything has gone up,” she said.
