RAINY RIVER, Ont. – The Northwestern Health Unit reported a single new case of COVID-19 Monday, as the number of active cases across its territory shrank significantly over the weekend.

There were 18 cases active in the NWHU’s catchment area as of Monday, down from 28 on Friday.

The health unit has contended with a recent spike in its Rainy River region, where a record 18 new cases were declared in a single day on Jan. 10, and multiple institutional outbreaks were declared.

Active cases in that region fell to 16 on Monday, from 24 on Friday, according to NWHU data.

The newest case reported Monday involved an individual in the Rainy River region. Anyone identified as a contact will be contacted directly, the health unit said.

The agency also confirmed a case previously reported as probable in the district Monday.

Meanwhile, one case reported last week in the Dryden/Red Lake region has been removed from the health unit’s dataset, it reported. It did not provide further explanation for the change in reporting.

Three individuals in the NWHU were in hospital with the virus as of Monday, a number unchanged since Friday.
