OPP canine calendar now available (Video)

The annual calendar celebrating the Ontario Provincial Police service dogs supports the OPP Youth Foundation.

RAINY RIVER, Ont. - They are just as hardworking as any uniformed officer and a calendar celebrating these four-legged members is also providing youth with important opportunities to grow and succeed.

The Ontario Provincial Police has released its 2019 Canine Unit Calendar. The annual calendar features photographs of service dogs from across the province.

The OPP Canine Unit was formed in 1965 and since that time it has grown from only three teams to 28 across Ontario.

Canine teams, which consist of a dog and a handler, are stationed at strategic locations throughout the province to provide support for search and rescue operations, tracking wanting persons, detecting narcotics, and searching for cadavers, firearms, explosives and physical evidence.

All the proceeds from the calendar support the OPP Friends of the Museum and the OPP Youth Foundation. The Youth Foundation offers a wide range of programs to help youth build self-esteem and life skills through the Youth Summer Camps, Youth Development Fund, and Post-Secondary Education Assistance Program.

The calendar costs $10 and can be purchased at the Rainy River OPP detachment or online at the OPP website
