Two pedestrians just managed to get out of the way of a vehicle being driven by an impaired driver Sunday.
Officials with the Thunder Bay Police Service say one of their officers noticed some people on the road at Balmoral Street by Andrew Street just after midnight Sunday. The officer stopped to speak to the man and woman who ahd fallen off a bicycle.
As the pair were directed to get off the roadway, the officers spotted a southbound vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed toward the pedestrians.
Police say the officer shouted at the pedestrians to get out of the way. The woman was able to make it onto the sidewalk. The man, who had the bike at the time, jumped toward the police officers’ cruiser.
The rear tire of the bicycle was clipped by the vehicle that continued to head south on Balmoral Street.
The officer began following the vehicle and pulled the driver over in the Academy Drive area.
As a result of that incident, a 50-year-old man was arrested and has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, failing to stop at an accident and breach of probation.
