Police confirm that they are investigating an alleged sexual assault but won’t say much more.
Accusations that a First Nations woman was brutally assaulted in Thunder Bay by two Caucasian males Thursday evening spread through social media Sunday after Metis artist Christi Belcourt released a statement on behalf of the woman’s family. First Nations leaders have labeled the alleged incident as a hate crime.
Thunder Bay Police Service Const. Julie Tilbury would only confirm that the incident is currently under investigation but could not confirm any of the details. She said because it is a sexual assault case, police do not typically send out media releases.
More information will be available Monday.
