THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay police are investigating two cases of arson overnight on the south-side of the city.

The first happened around midnight with a car in the 200 block of East Francis set on fire, and then around 2:30 Thursday morning, the newly installed ''portable toilet'' near Shelter House on George Street was the target.

The portable toilet was installed as part of a pilot project that aimed to give the city's least fortunate a place to go to the bathroom with dignity.

The city's crime prevention council led the initiative, installing the toilet in mid August.

“It’s really just about giving people the dignity of a washroom that they can use,” said Gary Mack, Shelter House executive director, during an interview with TBT News just days after the installation.

“When you’re homeless you can’t just go into a restaurant, maybe you’re barred from the mall, maybe you’re just not allowed to just use other washrooms, so a lot people have been forced to go to the washroom in alleys and places like that.”

No arrests have been made
