Police have recovered up to half-a-million dollars in cocaine near Boulevard Lake.

The Combined Forced Organized Crime Unit on Monday said on Oct. 18 officers witnessed a man, known to police as being involved in the drug trade, acting suspiciously in the vicinity of the park.

"Investigators were fortunate enough to locate the male and do some observations. Taking that into consideration, they went with their investigations and observations and seized a sizable amount of cocaine," said Staff Sgt. Murray Brown of Thunder Bay Police Services, estimating the drug's value would be worth about $120,000 if sold all at once.

"This is the largest street team seizure of cocaine in the City of Thunder Bay to date."

Brown said the man, who police did not name, was not expecting company as he attempted to hide the drugs.

"It's safe to say the individual thought that he would not be detected by police, but he was detected by police. He was very surprised when the officers tried to apprehend him. As a result he did take flight and was apprehended a short distance away."

Police say the cocaine recovered weighed in at two kilograms.

The suspect has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine, resisting arrest and breach of undertaking.

He will next appear in court on Dec. 5.
