UPDATE: Police responding to hostage situation in north end

The police are urging the public to avoid the area of the 100 block of Cumberland Street North.

THUNDER BAY — City and provincial police are responding to a hostage situation on Cumberland Street North.

The public is strongly advised to avoid the the 100 block of Cumberland.

An OPP spokesperson confirmed an incident commander has been called in to assist the Thunder Bay Police with the incident.

City police officers were dispatched just after 8:30 a.m. on Friday.

A media release issued by the Thunder Bay Police Service just after 9:30 a.m., states that officers have contained the scene.

"For the safety of officers and the public, people are asked to avoid the area until the situation is resolved."
