TORONTO – Premier Doug Ford has said families shouldn’t expect children to be back in school April 6, as initially planned. While no official announcement has been made, the premier’s remarks at a Monday press conference were definitive.

“The kids won’t be going back to school on April 6,” Ford said in response to journalists’ questions.

“April 6 is not realistic right now,” he added. “We’re in a state of emergency… Our priority is making sure our kids are safe.”

The comments came after Ford announced a major escalation in efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, a two-week shutdown of all non-essential businesses in the province.

The provincial government decided on March 12 to close all publicly-funded schools for a two-week period following March break. That left school tentatively restarting on April 6.
