Sioux Lookout OPP reminding drivers of safe driving practices

SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON, --Members of the Sioux Lookout Ontario Provincial Police would like to remind motorists to practice safe and responsible driving on local roadways.

Driving is a responsibility taken on by every person who operates a motor vehicle. When drivers are careless or reckless, their actions could result in serious injury or death. If caught driving in an unsafe manner, drivers could be fined, sent to jail, have their licence suspended, and/or have their vehicle impounded.

To keep our roadways safe, OPP officers will be setting their sights on speeding and all other forms of dangerous driving in the upcoming weeks. Officers will be on the lookout for aggressive driving, including speeding, following too closely, failing to yield right-of-way, unsafe passing and lane changes, and other high-risk driving behaviours. This also includes driving on private property without permission, and operating any conveyance in a way that is dangerous to the public.

Drivers are reminded that speed limits are set to ensure the safety of all road users. Drayton Road, Sturgeon River Road, Sturgeon Meadows, and Abram Lake Road are all Class 5 roadways, with posted speed limits of 50 kilometres per hour. Highways 72, 516, 642, and 664 have posted speed limits of 80 kilometres per hour. As well as adhering to posted speed limits, drivers are responsible for driving to ever-changing road conditions.

As always, officers will be out patrolling local roads to educate drivers exhibiting unsafe driving practices. The public is also encouraged to contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-800-310-1122 whenever they observe a driver operating a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner.
