SIU terminates investigation into man falling from roof

Police watchdog concludes the man suffered the injuries as a result of his own actions.

THUNDER BAY - The province's police watchdog is clearing Thunder Bay police officers of any wrongdoing after a man fell from a roof last month.

The Special Investigations Unit, which announced on Tuesday it was terminating its investigation invoked its mandate after a 38-year-old man fractures his ankles after falling off what is described as an "icy, sloping roof."

Thunder Bay Police Service officers had been called to a residence to respond to a domestic incident on Jan. 21, where they found the man in his room. In an attempt to avoid speaking to the officers, the man fled out a window and onto the roof.

He then slid down the roof and landed on the cement sidewalk. The man was taken to hospital by ambulance.

“The injuries to the man occurred as a result of his own actions prior to his contact with the police. Accordingly, I have terminated the investigation into this incident,” SIU director Tony Loparco said in a statement.

The SIU conducts an investigation whenever police are involved in an interaction with a civilian that results in death, serious injury or sexual assault.
