Police are investigating a homicide and a serious assault on the city’s North side.

A female homeowner at 245 Villa Street found two people unconscious and seriously assaulted inside of her home and called police just after 7 p.m. Saturday. A 25-year-old male was found with no vital signs and was pronounced dead at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. A 23-year-old male was also found and faces serious life-threatening injuries. He is currently in hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Thunder Bay Police Service acting Det. Insp. Don Lewis said it could take until as late as Thursday for a post-mortem to be done on the 25-year-old to determine cause of death because of the New Year. Firearms have been ruled out though and both men had cuts on their bodies.

“It’s hard to say what caused his death at this point,” Lewis said.

As for how the men came to be in the home, Lewis said it’s unclear right now but the homeowner did know the men. The home and the two men are known to police.

“We’re not certain on how the individuals came to be in the residence whether they were visiting or there was a party there or anything like that,” he said.

Police aren’t discounting that the two men could have been the only ones involved but as of now they are looking for others who may have been there. Lewis said the incident does appear isolated though and there is no threat to public safety.

The 23-year-old man remains in hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol was a factor. It’s the city’s sixth homicide of 2012.

The assault was one of two major incidences on Saturday as police responded to an assault on Brant Street. Kimberly Fox has been charged with aggravated assault, accused of putting her boyfriend Moses Meekis Kakekagumick in critical condition. He remains in hospital.

Fox appeared in court Sunday with another date scheduled for Jan. 2. She was also charged with breach of probation and breach of undertaking.
