An area motorist was five kilometres-an-hour away from having their vehicle impounded by police Wednesday.

Officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service’s traffic unit issued 76 speeding tickets to drivers in the construction zone on the Harbour Expressway.

The speediest driver nabbed by officers was travelling through the 50 km/h construction zone at 96 km/h. A mere 5 km/h faster and police say the driver would have had to deal with an impounded vehicle.

Police say every motorist they stopped was going “significantly” faster than the posted speed limit.

“There were so many, we couldn’t possibly keep up,” one officer said of the traffic enforcement blitz.

In a news release issued Thursday morning, police officials state officers could have issued more than the 76 tickets had officers not been pulled away from the enforcement blitz to respond to motor vehicle collisions.
