Longtime hospital executive Michael Power is leaving the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for greener pastures.

Power, the chief executive officer at the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute and vice-president of chronic disease prevention and management at the hospital will be missed, on Thursday said the TBRRI's board president.

“It’s a loss to both the hospital and the research institute,” said Keith Jobbitt.

“Michael has done a fantastic job of bringing along the institute in just over four years to a level of activity and success that has indeed surprised many people in the research institute business,” he added.

“He’s assembled a very good team to work with him and so they brought the Research Institute a long way and definitely Michael will be missed as our CEO.”

After 15 years with the Health Sciences Centre, Power has accepted a new position with Elekta as vice-president and managing partner of strategic solutions and business development for North America.

Power also has a joint appointment as the hospital's  vice-president of Cancer Care Ontario.

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation board chairman Brian McKinnon said Power is going to leave a big hole. He was one of the prime movers in the TBRRI and many other programs at the hospital.

“Michael has been one of our leading lights. He’s going to be tough to replace. He’s been a great friend of the foundation. He’s been one of our really keen allies,” said McKinnon.

However, Power’s new position will keep him in Thunder Bay and McKinnon said he’s sure Power will continue to do great work.

“He’s gone off on a new adventure. I’m sure he still has the best interests of Thunder Bay at heart and I know he always will,” McKinnon said.

“I wish him nothing but good things,” he added.

Power will remain in his current role until May. Jobbitt said the Research Institute will work with the hospital to fill the position.

Power said he'll be making a statement to media Friday.
