THUNDER BAY -- City police have arrested and charged a suspect in the murder of a 25-year-old-man.

Mitchell Adam Soloman Suganaqueb of Thunder Bay has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the Dec. 29 death of Desmond Dennis Mathews.

The homicide was discovered when a homeowner returned home at about 7 p.m. and found Mathews and a badly injured 23-year-old-man at their residence.

Police say they took Suganaqueb into custody at a bus stop on Academy Drive just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

“The investigation is still ongoing and as of now it’s before the courts,” said acting Det.-Insp. Don Lewis, adding that through groundwork done by police, they were able to connect Suganaqueb to the scene.

And while the police don’t believe anyone else was involved, Lewis said they’re keeping their options open as the investigation continues.

“We’re still interviewing a couple of other witnesses that could potentially have evidence to support further investigation but we’re satisfied we’re on the right track,” he said.

Suganaqueb had his first court appearance on Thursday and remains in custody at the Thunder Bay District Jail.

He’s expected to appear in court again on Jan. 21.

The 23-year-old is in critical condition in a Toronto hospital.

There are no charges against Suganaqueb in connection with the 23-year-old male yet, said Lewis.

“We’re still digging at that aspect,” he said.
