A spokeswoman for a local charity says she was saddened to learn people stole money from a donation pail set up by a couple operating a popular Christmas light and music show.
A video posted on the Facebook page for "Jay and Jessica's Holiday Spectacular" shows the incident that occurred in the early hours of Monday morning outside their Walsh Street home.
In the security camera video, two people can be seen approaching the display, looking inside a curbside donation pail, then carrying it away.
Jessica Matyczuk and her husband Jason set up the show.
"(The thieves) bent down and read what (the donation pail) was for," Matyczuk said. "They tried to stick their hand in there and couldn't get it, so then they lifted it up."
The pail was anchored by a heavy paving stone so the culprits dropped it in a laneway a couple of doors away after removing the money.
Matyczuk isn't sure how much change the pail contained but said it was two nights worth of donations.
A spokesperson for Kitty Kare, Cindy Sakiyama, told tbnewswatch.com that she "was just looking at our Facebook page and I saw the video, and I was quite alarmed that someone would do that ... to see something happen like that."
Sakiyama said the Matyzcuks work hard to set up the display and to collect the charitable donations.
"They do this out of the kindness of their hearts" she said. "Somebody just walks by and decides to take it, it's kind of a sad comment."
