Lightning and humans are heating up the forest fire season in Northwestern Ontario.
There are 28 active fires in the region, but more than 30 were reported over the weekend.
Crews have been busy putting them out but the spike is a causing some concern, said fire information officer Debbie McLean.
“We’ve been making some good progress on some of the fires but that’s still a number of fires in a short period of time,” she said.
So far fires have not caused any major disruptions but some fires are currently burning more than 1,900 hectares. Sioux Lookout and Nipigon areas have been the hardest hit but with more thunderstorms expected, the MNR is anticipating more throughout Northwestern Ontario.
“It’s just a seasonal pattern where we have thunderstorms tracking through the region,” McLean said.
People need to be extra cautious with outdoor fires as they can turn into wildfires quickly if not properly put out. To report a fire call 310-FIRE.
