Thunder Bay Police Service make changes to services amid COVID-19 pandemic

Effective immediately, anyone who needs access to the lobby of the Balmoral Street headquarters will be subject to a self-screening questionnaire in an effort to limit non-emergency contact with members of the Thunder Bay Police Service.

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Police Service has released a statement concerning its COVID-19 response.

The police force will be making adjustments effective immediately in order to limit in-person or non-emergency contact with members, according to a media release issued on Monday.

Members of the public who need access to the lobby of the Balmoral Street headquarters will be subject to a self-screening questionnaire regarding symptoms of potential exposure to the COVID-19 virus.

“Given the very threats posed by the pandemic, the health and safety of our members and the public is a continued concern for the Thunder Bay Police Service,” Chris Adams, a spokesperson with the police service, said in the release.

Non-emergency related matters or general inquiries should be done over the phone at 807-684-1200, according to the Thunder Bay Police Service. There may be delays due to the call volume but there is also an option of leaving your contact information on a voice message machine for a call back.

The following changes in effect include the collision reporting centre is now accepting reports over the phone at 807-345-1617. Individuals can arrange with staff on how to photograph damage.

The public is also encouraged to utilize the online reporting tool for any incidents involving damage or mischief to property under $5,000, lost and found property, theft under $5,000, shoplifting, stolen license plate, theft or mischief from a vehicle under $5,000, harassing phone call, lost or stolen identification and break and enter to a shed or detached garage.

Anyone who is required to report to police due to a release order or other judicial requirement must still attend the police station and will be subject to a pre-screening upon arrival.

Police record checks can be done so online, if your presence is required in person, you will be notified.

For any other type of police information or applications such as FOI requests or synopsis of police reports call 807- 684-1376 and leave a message to make arrangements.
