Tribunal decides in favour of multiparty settlement for mill cleanup

A decision has been made regarding who is responsible for the clean-up and storage of the leftover chemicals at the shut-down Marathon Pulp Mill.

A decision has been made regarding who is responsible for the clean-up and storage of the leftover chemicals at the shut-down Marathon Pulp Mill.

The mill has been closed since March of 2009, but has since had issues with spills of black liquor, the by-product of the pulping process.

The Environmental Review Tribunal has decided in favour of a tentative settlement that was reached in September by the Ministry of the Environment, Tembec and several other parties.

The decision is being hailed as good news for Marathon and the surrounding area as the mill will continue to be maintained and monitored by Tembec until a full clean-up of the mill and Peninsula Harbor has been completed.

The Canadian firm Ball Packaging Products will be taking care of the harbour cleanup.
