Vermilion Bay man fined $5,500 for attempted deer poaching

DRYDEN, ONT., — A Dryden-area man has been fined a total of $5,500 after attempting to illegally poach a deer more than a year ago.

Conservation officers were conducting a deer decoy operation to curtail ongoing issues of deer being shot on private property in the Waldhof area, the ministry of natural resources and forestry said in a news release issued on Jan. 22.

Court heard on Nov. 10, 2019, Ronald Gangloff of Vermilion Bay was travelling on Rhyner Road when he spotted the deer decoy on the private property beyond a fence and signs.

Gangloff stopped his vehicle, loaded his gun and shot at the deer decoy from inside his vehicle.

He was subsequently fined $2,000 for discharging a firearm from a vehicle, $1,000 for having a loaded firearm inside his vehicle and $2,500 for shooting at a deer on private property for which he did not have permission to hunt, court heard.

The case was heard by a justice of the peace in Dryden on Dec. 15, 2020.
