Westfort businesses give RFDA financial boost

A group of Westfort businesses have helped the Regional Food Distribution Association to the tune of $973.

A group of Westfort businesses have helped the Regional Food Distribution Association to the tune of $973.

On Friday, with the help of Westfort Community members, the money was turned over to RFDA president Volker Kromm, who said it will be put to good use.

“It means we go shopping and we buy food,” said Kromm, whose organization distributes food to more than two dozen food banks in Thunder Bay and the region.

“Westfort has always been such a generous community. This is sort of the epicenter of community spirit or neighbours helping neighbours. Every time we do a food drive, every time there’s a crisis in this community, this Westfort community steps up to the plate.”

Kromm said the donation is a timely one, noting that even though the RFDA recently benefited from a postal workers’ food drive, as quickly as the food comes in the door it’s on its way out again.

Claudio Monteleone of the Westfort Community said about a dozen merchants took part in the fundraising drive, which saw them collect donations at each of their stores.

“They are our local charity and it benefits a number of people here in Thunder Bay and around the region,” Montoleone said.

It’s all for the good of the community.

“A lot of the merchants felt it was important to do something for the Regional Food Distribution Association because they are a very vital and important organization and charity here in the Westfort community.

“Talking to a number of the merchants we came up with the idea that we put out donor tags where their customers could come in and donate and then receive a donor tag.”

Donors were entered into a draw for a variety of prizes provided by each participating outlet.
