THUNDER BAY – The annual dragon boat races will be on the move for the first time in 17 years.

The Thunder Bay Dragon Boat Race Festival is expected to move to Mission Island this year, with boats taking to the McKellar River.

The city has planned to drain Boulevard Lake, the longtime home of the event, in June for dredging.

Lakehead Canoe Club commodore Volker Kromm said he’s aware the move might impact participation but said the change in venue gives organizers the opportunity to experiment with making changes.

The 2015 event is scheduled for July 18.
