Thunder Bay’s Eric Staal is the Carolina Hurricanes nominee for the King Clancy Trophy.

The award, named for the former Toronto Maple Leafs great, is given to the player who best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice, while making  noteworthy contribution to the community.

For the past five seasons Staal has purchased a luxury suite for each Carolina home game, fully equipped with food, snacks and drinks, and donates it to a local children’s charity.

The lucky children are known as Eric’s Entourage.

According to a release issued by the Hurricanes, Staal is also a key part of the Kids N’ Community Foundation’s fundraising efforts.

On the ice the 28-year-old leads the Hurricanes with 51 points in 47 games, sixth best in the NHL. He’s eighth in the league in assists and second on the team in goals, with 18.

In 689 career games, Staal has 268 goals and 357 assists for 625 points.
