Pentti Lund died Tuesday morning at age 87. The Finnish-born right-winger won the Calder Trophy for top rookie in 1949 after scoring 14 goals and 30 points for the New York Rangers.

He suffered a serious eye injury in 1951, which cut short his hockey career. He went on to become a longtime sportswriter in Thunder Bay, and was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.

Born in Karijoki, Finland, Lund  finished his NHL career with 44 goals and 99 points in 259 career games, spending his final two seasons with the Boston Bruins before retiring in 1953.
