Four Cats heading to Major League Dreams Showcase

Andy Weber, Nick Ciandro, Jean-Francois Garon and Jake Mielock will show off their skills in front of scouts in Madison, Wisc. on Aug. 8.

THUNDER BAY – A quartet of Thunder Bay Border Cats are headed to next month’s Major League Dreams Showcase.

Led by all-star Andy Weber, the Cats will also send catcher Nick Ciandro, speedy outfielder Jean-Francois Garon and pitcher Jake Mielock to the event, designed to bring potential MLB prospects together for scouts to see them all in one place. They'll also spend the day working out for the scouts.

Weber, who has shifted between second base and shortstop in 2017, is hitting .276 and boasts a .371 on base percentage in his second summer in Thunder Bay.

Ciandro has struggled at the plate, hitting just .136, but he’s been a steadying influence on the Thunder Bay pitching staff in the field.

Garon, the lone Canadian on the Border Cats roster, has a .259 average, but has clubbed three home runs and leads the team with three triples, to go with 16 RBI.

Mielock has been Thunder Bay’s top starter all season long. Though just 1-3 in the win-loss column, he’s got a dazzling 1.62 earned run average, striking out 34 in 33.1 innings of work.

The event, which will feature four teams playing a single game apiece, is set for Aug. 8 in Madison, Wisc. The Thunder Bay players will take part in the 4:05 p.m. CDT opening game.
