THUNDER BAY -- The Guelph Gryphons sure know how to spoil a teddy bear’s picnic.

The OUA hockey squad scored six straight goals to open Friday’s game against the Lakehead Thunderwolves at Fort William Gardens and held on to win 8-5 and snap their opponent’s three-game winning streak.

Nick Boyer scored twice and Seth Swenson and Robert Lepine had a goal and two assists apiece for the Gryphons, who scored five times on LU goalie Devin Green before the game was 10 minutes old.

Trailing 6-0, the Wolves did manage to mount a comeback in the second and third, scoring four straight to close the gap to 6-4.

Cody Alcock was the first LU player to beat Scott Strajcer in the Guelph net. Kelin Ainsworth, Grant Valiquete and Linden Springer also scored, the Wolves closing to within two at the 9:12 mark of the final period.

After Alcock’s goal fans littered the fans with stuffed animals, an annual tradition for the Wolves, who donated the toys to children in need.

But Swenson and Boyer struck against replacement Lakehead goalie Justin McDonald, who took over for Green to start the second.

McDonald stopped 17 of 20 shots he faced, a marked improvement on the nine saves Green made on 14 shots against.

Tyler Anton rounded out the scoring for Lakehead, his first of the season coming at 13:21.
