Kevin Tree was the closest Lakehead runner to reach the podium on the weekend, finishing fourth in the men's 3000-metre race on Friday at the OUA Indoor Track Championship.
Leading most of the race, Tree was overtaken on the final lap and tried to stretch it out for the bronze medal, but was beaten by 0.16 seconds and forced to settle for fourth place with a time of 8:21.35. Lakehead's Tyler White ran a new personal best in the rac,e finishing in 8:46.98, placing 13th.
In the women's 3,000-metre race, Kayla Gallo and Marla Keyes placed 15th and 16th, respectively, improving on their ranking coming into the race (19th and 21st).
Mason Quarrell and White both ran well in the 1,500-metre race on Saturday, Quarrell making an impressive effort, as he came into the race ranked 16th and placed eighth overall inf 3:58.31, second in his section. White won his section and placed 17th overall in a time of 4:03.36.
In the women's 1,500-metre competition, Gallo ran a new personal best 4:57.42, placing 20th, while Keyes was next crossed next in 5:07.38.
"It was a very good weekend, the athletes ran tough and finished better than their rankings coming in," said LU coach Kip Sigsworth. "Tree went for it in the three-kilometre and just came up short of a medal. Mason got better each meet this season and was top eight today after coming in ranked 16th. Tyler White had a break out season and set himself up well for a big final year next season."
