WINDSOR, Ont. – Fresh off a Memorial Cup win with the Ontario Hockey League team, Thunder Bay’s Trevor Letowski is taking over the reins of the Windsor Spitfires.
Letowski, 40, was officially named to the post on Thursday, after two seasons with the Spitfires as an associate coach.
Prior to that, he spent six seasons in the Sarnia Sting organization.
“You’re always learning,” Letowski told the Windsor Star's Jim Parker. “I think I’ve learned with Rocky and Jerrod (Smith, the club’s assistant coach) and Boughie (president Bob Boughner) around helping. You continue to grow.
“I’ve been in some big tournaments with the Memorial Cup and have world junior experience. I think sitting here today, compared to two years ago, I’m better and more experienced.”
In his playing days, Letowski appeared in 616 games split between Phoenix, Vancouver, Columbus and Carolina.
He also spent two seasons in the KHL with Astana Barys.
In two seasons as the Sting’s head coach, Letowski, who signed a four-year deal with the Spitfires, posted a 46-76-15 record.
He told the Star he’s happy to be sticking in the Rose City for the foreseeable future.
“For me, I just want to be in a good situation,” Letowski told the paper. “Family is important to me. I’m competitive and want to keep learning and developing, but I want to be in healthy situation.”
Letowski takes over from Rocky Thompson, who left to become head coach of the American Hockey League’s Chicago Wolves.
