Stuart Melnick only carried the ball for 39 yards on Friday, but the Westgate Tigers halfback made the most of every one of them.
Melnick scored three times on the ground, leading the 2-2 Tigers to a 21-14 win over the St. Ignatius Falcons in senior high school boys football.
Michael Pontello rushed for 117 yards and a score in a losing cause for the 0-4 Falcons.
In other action, Churchill knocked St. Patrick from the ranks of the unbeaten, thanks in part to a pair of touchdowns on 144 yards, taking the tightly contested game 24-18. Quarterback Kurtis Pelletier was 6-for-8 for 103 yards and a score for St. Patrick.
St. Patrick’s loss was Hammarskjold’s gain. The Vikings grabbed sole possession of top spot in the Superior Secondary School Athletic Association standings, riding a two-touchdown day from quarterback Alex Nemek-Bakk, who ran for one and threw for one in his team’s 28-0 win over 0-4 Superior Collegiate.
