Nationals crush Regina to open Little League championship

Evan Lachimea hits a pair of home runs, drives in five to lead Thunder Bay team to decisive win.

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. – Evan Lachimea powered the Port Arthur Nationals to an opening day win at the Canadian Little League Championship in Medicine Hat, Alta.

The Thunder Bay slugger was 4-for-5 at the plate on Thursday, blasting a pair of home runs and driving in five to lead the Nationals to a decisive 13-1 win over the Regina Kiwanis Nationals.

Lachimea also scored three runs out of the lead-off spot in the Port Arthur lineup.

Liam Willmore was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish, scoring twice and driving in a pair. He also earned the win on the mound, tossing 2.1 innings of three-hit ball, giving up the lone Regina run. Cam Kaytor took the loss for Regina.

Port Arthur will take on Mirabel Diamond Academy on Friday. The Quebec representatives doubled Lethbridge 4-2 on Day 1. B.C.’s White Rock squad trounced the host Medicine Hat All-Stars 13-2.
