On Wednesday night Joe Scharf stands alone.

Looking for a return trip to the Brier for the first time in 10 years, Scharf scored a 5-3 win over defending champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, knocking him from the ranks of the undefeated at the Northern Ontario men’s provincial play-downs at Fort William Curling Club.

Scharf (7-0) scored a steal of two in the ninth end, then ran Jacobs out of rocks in the 10th, leaving him the final team with no losses at the week-long event.

Bryan Burgess also found his way into the win column on Wednesday, defeating fellow Thunder Bay skip Mike Assad 8-7.

Burgess (4-2) is locked in a two-way tie for third place with former champion Mike Jakubo, who defeated Robbie Gordon (1-5) easily by a 7-4 count.

In the fourth and final game of Draw 10, Englehart’s Dave MacInnes (1-6) scored a 7-1 win over Tim Nordin (2-5). It was MacInnes’ first win of the tournament.

Draw 11, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., will feature Thunder Bay’s Jeff Currie (3-3) taking on Burgess; Assad (3-3) will try to snap a two-game losing streak against Dustin Montpellier; Thunder Bay’s Mike Pozihum (3-3) will play Gordon and Jakubo will combat Geraldton’s John Salo (3-3).
